Overview
Ujung Kulon National Park is located at the western tip of Java Island, Indonesia. The park area includes the Krakatau Nature Reserve and several small islands around it, such as Handeuleum Island and Peucang Island. Covering approximately 122,956 hectares (443 km² of which is marine area), the park stretches from the Ujung Kulon headland to the Indian Ocean.
Ujung Kulon became the first National Park established in Indonesia, and in 1991 it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its vast protected forest. Today, it remains the last natural refuge of the endangered Javan rhinoceros, with an estimated 50 to 60 individuals living in its habitat.
Together with the Krakatau Nature Reserve, Ujung Kulon is considered a national treasure of Indonesia. UNESCO has provided financial support and technical assistance to improve its management as a World Natural Heritage Site. Entry permits can be obtained at the National Park Headquarters in Labuan or Tamanjaya, while lodging is available on Handeuleum Island and Peucang Island.
